Shanghai Commercial Pok Oi Cycle for Millions 2019 Collaborates with Renowned Local Comic ‘Wind and Cloud”
Celebrates its 10th anniversary on 10 March 2019

 

(Hong Kong - Tuesday, 18 December 2018) Shanghai Commercial Pok Oi Cycle for Millions, the largest cycling event for charity in Hong Kong, will be held again on 10 March, 2019 (Sunday) at Stonecutters Bridge. This charity event is organized by Pok Oi Hospital (POH) and title-sponsored by Shanghai Commercial Bank. The ultimate goal of this event, apart from charity, is to educate the public on road safety and low-carbon living. Cycle for Millions also supports the development of “POH Tuen Mun Lam Tei Nursing and Residential Care Home for the Elderly”. The year 2019 marks Cycle for Millions 10th anniversary, the event has attracted over 46,000 participants and raised over HK$65 million since it was first held in 2009.


Collaboration with “Wind and Cloud” to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Pok Oi Hospital collaborates with “Wind and Cloud”, the popular comic by Mr. Ma Wing Shing, the well-known comic artist. The organiser intends to encourage the public and the youth to build up a habit of helping themselves as well as others.

 

Mr. Ma Wing Shing, the comic artist, said, “I am delighted that Cycle for Millions 2018 has received a very positive feedback from the public and a record breaking donation amount. It is my honour to have the opportunity to participate once again. In order to bring more joyful surprises to the participants, I will use more Hong Kong Comic elements’ concept. To mark the speciality of the 10th anniversary, I have exclusively designed a series of Limited Edition Premium, including the10th Anniversary Road Bike, which is available for sale at HKD48,800. This special edition is limited to a total of 10 Road Bikes worldwide and I hope this will raise substantial amount for this charity event.


Unlimited rides at the Stonecutters Bridge and the bicycle and healthy living carnival

The route will start from Tsing Sha Highway, cycling through Stonecutters Bridge and Nam Wan Tunnel. The route is approximately 13km long in total.  Merit Fundraising Award will be presented to participants raising over HKD1,500 and HKD38,000 from the individual category and the corporate category respectively.  Unlimited rounds of cycling within a specified event time will also be granted to the above-said participants to enjoy the spectacular view of Stonecutters Bridge, Rambler Channel, the magnificent city skyline and beautiful scenery along Victoria Harbour.


Abicycle and healthy-living carnival will also be held at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi). Apart from the awards presentation ceremony, there will also be performances, game booths, charity bazaars, product trials and gift distributions for participants.

Mr. Yeung Tak Keung,Commissioner for Sports, Home Affairs Bureau, HKSAR, said, Cycle for Millions has been well received by the public since 2009 and is now a charitable community event icon in Hong Kong. Cycling is always a popular sport and we are pleased to see Cycle for Millions being a key platform to encourage the public to do more exercise leading to a healthy lifestyle. It also promotes cycling, and road safety. In order to develop a good cycling habit and manner leading to a Zero Accident’ environment, lectures on road safety for participants will be held and wearing helmet throughout the whole event is also a must. We hope this encourages participants to develop a good road cycling habit to minimise the chance of accidents, creating a safe environment for cyclists.”
 

Funds raised from Cycle for Millions will be donated to establish Asia’s largest care home for the elderly in Lam Tei, Tuen Mun. “POH Tuen Mun Lam Tei Nursing and Residential Care Home for the Elderly” is expected to be completed by 2022, providing 1,433 beds, comprised of continuum of care places and nursing home places for elderly with different levels of weakness. The facility will help relieve the pressure caused by a shortage of elderly home places.

Calling for support

Registration for Shanghai Commercial Pok Oi Cycle for Millions 2019 is now open for application and the maximum number of participants will be 6,000. It is open to individuals aged 8 years old or above, who can take part as an individual or form a corporate team. Minimum donation for each individual is HKD680 and HKD28,000 is for corporate teams. A multi-purpose tote bag will be awarded to participants who have enrolled and settled the payment on or before 4 January 2019, as an early bird offer. To recognise public engagement, the organiser is delighted to present the “Best Fundraising Awards – Gold, Silver and Bronze” as well as “Best Dressed Participants”.
